How to Use Mama Comfort Pads After a Hospital Birth

Step 1: Pack for the hospital

Bring your Mama Comfort Pads with you and ask to store them in the hospital’s common freezer.

Step 2: Use After Delivery

Once your baby and placenta are delivered and you’re advised to use a regular menstrual or hygienic pad, ask a support person to retrieve a frozen Mama Comfort Pad.

Allow it to thaw for about 15 minutes before separating the pads.

  • Gently place the pad on your perineal area (and over the anus if desired).
  • Use an absorbent mat or menstrual pad underneath to catch excess fluid.

Step 3: Continue Comfort Support

When your nurse checks your pad or every few hours, switch to a fresh frozen (lightly thawed) pad for continued cooling comfort.

  • Use 3 to 5 frozen pads during the early recovery window.
  • Afterward, you may use the pads cool (refrigerated) for continued soothing.

How to Use Mama Comfort Pads After an At-Home Birth

Step 1: Prepare Ahead of Time

Make sure your Mama Comfort Pads are in the freezer and accessible for when the baby delivers.

Step 2: Apply After Birth

Once your baby and placenta are delivered, ask someone to retrieve a frozen Mama Comfort Pad.

Allow it to thaw for about 15 minutes before separating the pads.

  • Cleanse your perineal area gently with warm water or a peri-bottle, and pat dry.
  • Apply the Mama Comfort Pad to your perineal area.
  • Use an absorbent mat or menstrual pad underneath to catch excess fluid.

Step 3: Continue Comfort Support

Replace pads every 2-3 hours during the first 24-48 hours.

  • For ongoing relief, switch to cool (not frozen) pads after the initial uses.

For extended care

Should you have received an episiotomy, a perineal tear, or acquired a hemorrhoid, you can extend the use of your Mama Comfort pads by cutting the last one in 5 equal parts. Apply it directly to the affected area at bedtime for 5 nights.
